International Student Health Insurance Information

Tulane University requires all full-time degree-seeking students and all Tulane-sponsored students in J-1 status to either enroll in or waive out of the Tulane student health insurance plan provided by United Healthcare.

You will be automatically billed for and enrolled in the Tulane student health insurance plan. J-1 students not sponsored by Tulane and F-1 students who are part-time, dissertation and Master’s research students, teaching assistants, part-time professional and executive program students are strongly urged to carry adequate health insurance and may enroll voluntarily, but are not required to do so.



F-1 degree-seeking international students who will be full-time will automatically be enrolled in and charged for both the spring and the summer (continuous coverage must be maintained).  The cost will be $1,708, and will appear in your student account at http://gibson.tulane.edu.  F-1 students must complete their registration of course work before requesting enrollment or a waiver of the TU sponsored student plan. 

International J-1 exchange students have been automatically billed and enrolled in the Tulane student health insurance plan provided by United Healthcare. The cost will that will appear on the fee bill is $1,127.  Students may apply for a waiver from enrollment by providing proof of other equivalent insurance coverage.



How to Enroll in Tulane Insurance

International J-1 exchange students  You have been automatically charged and enrolled in the insurance plan, so if you would like the Tulane insurance, all you need to do is create an account online and then print your insurance card.   • NOTE: Since your student account will be charged for insurance, you should NOT pay for the insurance when you go online to print your insurance card.

F-1 degree-seeking international students The enrollment web address is http://studentcenter.uhcsr.com/Tulane .  Once you have enrolled in full time classes, you can enroll on this page or, if you take no action, you will be automatically enrolled in a timely manner.

Part-Time/ Dissertation Status International Students Part-time students can request coverage using this web address https://requestcoverage.uhcsr.com/

If you do NOT want the Tulane health insurance, it is possible to apply for a waiver.

  • If you have coverage that meets or exceeds the Tulane plan, you may apply for a waiver beginning December 14, 2015 at  http://gallagherstudent.com
    • Waivers are now processed by a third party, Arthur J. Gallagher and Co.
    • You will use to your Tulane email account as your user name and your Tulane ID number as your temporary password to log in.
    • Requests for waivers should receive an answer within 48 hours.
    • Please check your Tulane emails as you may be contacted to submit additional evidence needed to process your insurance waiver.
    • ** If you have already submitted documentation to healthins@tulane.edu, please note that they are saving those documents in case they are needed later in the process, but they are not processing insurance waivers.
  • The final deadline to waive or enroll is February 5, 2016 at 11:59 pm. Please plan appropriately.
  • If your insurance plan does NOT meet the waiver requirements, you will remain enrolled in the Tulane health insurance plan and will be responsible for paying for your coverage in a timely manner or your Gibson account will accrue interest charges.
  • NOTE: It is recommended that you complete the enrollment/ waiver process before receiving any at the Student Health Center.   Any charges will automatically be charged to the Tulane University Student Health Insurance Plan unless you have received a waiver.  If charges are made to Tulane insurance, you will be automatically enrolled in the student insurance plan and will not be able to apply for a waiver.

In order to be granted a waiver, you must have proof of insurance that meets the following standard:

_____ Is this plan in compliance with all applicable Affordable Care Act requirements?
_____ Does this plan provide unlimited annual and lifetime benefits (i.e. there is no policy maximum)?
_____ Does this plan have a U.S. Claims office and telephone?
_____ Does this plan provide direct payment to providers?
_____ Will this plan cover the insured for the entire academic year while attending Tulane?
_____ Does this plan cover pre-existing conditions without a waiting period?
_____ Does this plan include coverage for club sports? (This requirement does not apply to NCAA competitive sports.)
_____ Does this plan have mental health benefits?
_____ Does this plan have pharmacy benefits?
_____ Does this plan provide emergency and non-emergency care in the New Orleans area?
_____ Does this plan have at least 75% coinsurance?
_____ Does this plan have a maximum deductible of $500?
_____Does this plan have medical evacuation benefits of at least $50,000?. If NOT, then how much?
Does this plan have repatriation benefits of at least $25,000? If NOT, then how much?

It is important that you check your Gibson student account (gibson.tulane.edu) to ensure the following:

  • The insurance charge is listed.
  • If your waiver was approved, that the insurance charge has been removed.
  • If you are not required to have insurance and you did not voluntarily request insurance, that the fees are not listed.
  • It is your responsibility to make sure that your account is corrected in a timely manner.
