Study Abroad Training for Faculty and Staff

Immerse yourself in a full day of insightful sessions, meaningful networking, and collaboration with colleagues dedicated to crafting outstanding study abroad experiences. This training is specifically designed for faculty and staff members directing and/or accompanying Tulane international programs in 2025. Session scheduling subject to change.
Audience in Attendance:
- Faculty directors of NTC OSA Summer programs and NTC OSA accompanying staff (mandatory)
- Regular NTC Study Abroad Faculty (highly encouraged)
- All Tulane faculty and staff affiliates engaging in international programs during summer 2025 (you do not need to be on an NTC summer program to attend these trainings!) (highly encouraged)

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM: Tulane Study Abroad Faculty-led Best Practices
Audience: Faculty and staff leading a program or working on study abroad programs during the summer of 2026.

Designed for first-time and returning faculty and staff leading international programs with Tulane, this orientation session provides an overview of essential responsibilities outlined in Tulane's travel policies, and best practices for study abroad. Gain the foundational knowledge needed to ensure a successful and impactful program.
10:15 AM – 11:15 AM: Health and Safety in Action
Audience: All international program faculty and staff
Speaker: Tulane Global
Join this interactive information session to delve into Tulane's comprehensive health and safety resources. Collaborate with peers as you explore essential guidelines and practical strategies to safeguard the well-being of students participating in Tulane-led programs. This session will provide an overview of Tulane’s International Crisis Plan and equip participants with an understanding of how to handle common incidents abroad.
11:30-12:30: Balancing Academics and Experiential Learning in Study Abroad
Speakers: Annie Gibson and Mike Whisenant
Discover: Discover strategies for fostering impactful intercultural learning experiences on summer study abroad programs. This session emphasizes the importance of collaboration between faculty and staff to create cohesive co-curricular opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. Participants will explore methods for open communication between all leaders and learn how to adopt the role of mentors, guiding students in navigating cross-cultural interactions and personal growth.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM: Navigating Travel Booking and Concur
Audience: All new faculty on study abroad programs and returning faculty who need Travel Booking and Concur refresh

Simplify the complexities of travel logistics and Concur. Tulane’s Travel Management Team will provide practical tips and techniques for efficient travel planning, booking, and processing your T&E card travel payments through Concur.
3:00-4:00: Health and Safety Scenarios for Group Travel in High-Risk Travel Locations
Audience:
This session is intended for TU Faculty and Staff who:
Manage or oversee Tulane-related group activity to high-risk locations abroad (faculty, students, or staff)
Serve as your school, unit, or organization’s point of contact/on-call representative for incidents abroad (working with TU Global)
Speaker: Tulane Global
Table-Top Exercise (TTX) on Enhanced Emergency Preparedness & Response for TU-related activities abroad, designed for (but not limited to) faculty and staff leading group travel to “high risk” countries (DOS levels 3 and 4, or specific location-based risk). The goal of this tabletop exercise is to create general awareness of Tulane's International Crisis Plan and communication tools and build up incident response skills for managing incidents abroad.
