Study Abroad Training for Faculty and Staff

Immerse yourself in a full day of insightful sessions, meaningful networking, and collaboration with colleagues dedicated to crafting outstanding study abroad experiences. This training is specifically designed for faculty and staff members directing and/or accompanying Tulane international programs in 2025. Session scheduling subject to change.

Audience in Attendance:

  • Faculty directors of NTC OSA Summer programs and NTC OSA accompanying staff (mandatory)
  • Regular NTC Study Abroad Faculty (highly encouraged)
  • All Tulane faculty and staff affiliates engaging in international programs during summer 2025 (you do not need to be on an NTC summer program to attend these trainings!) (highly encouraged)

Concurrent Sessions: Contracts and Foundations of Faculty-Led Programs

  1. Session 1: NTC Faculty-Led Contract and Responsibilities Deep Dive
    Audience: NTC Faculty Directors and accompanying NTC staff
    Speaker: Casey Love

    This session is tailored for NTC faculty directors and NTC OSA staff to revisit and discuss the responsibilities outlined in their job descriptions. Engage in a focused review of contract details and explore updates or adjustments to ensure alignment with program goals.

  2. Session 2: NTC Faculty-Led Contract and Responsibilities Orientation
    Audience: NTC accompanying faculty (teaching faculty/non-directors on summer programs)
    Speaker: Annie Gibson

    Designed for NTC faculty accompanying international programs, this orientation session provides an overview of essential responsibilities outlined in their job descriptions, Tulane’s travel policies, and best practices in study abroad. Gain the foundational knowledge needed to ensure a successful and impactful program.

Health and Safety in Action: Best Practices for Tulane-Run Programs 

Audience: All international program faculty and staff
Speaker: Annie Gibson, Tulane Global

Join this interactive tabletop working session to delve into Tulane's comprehensive health and safety protocols. Collaborate with peers as you explore essential guidelines and practical strategies to safeguard the well-being of students participating in Tulane-led programs. This session will provide actionable insights and tools to implement these practices effectively.

Cultivating Co-Curricular Learning: Faculty & Staff as Mentors Abroad

Audience: All international program faculty and staff
Speakers: Annie Gibson and Emma Brick-Hezeau

Discover strategies for fostering impactful intercultural learning experiences on summer study abroad programs. This session emphasizes the importance of collaboration between faculty and staff to create cohesive co-curricular opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. Participants will explore methods for open communication between all leaders and learn how to adopt the role of mentors, guiding students in navigating cross-cultural interactions and personal growth.

 

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM:
Navigating Travel Booking and Concur

Audience: All new faculty on study abroad programs and returning faculty who need Travel Booking and Concur refresh
Speaker: Laney Armstrong

Simplify the complexities of travel logistics and Concur. Laney Armstrong will provide practical tips and techniques for efficient travel planning, booking, and processing your T&E card travel payments through Concur.


3:00 PM - 4:00 PM: Leading Impactful Service Learning Abroad

Audience: All faculty who teach service learning abroad and/or who plan to do a day of service
Speaker: Susanne Hackett, CPS

Designed for faculty and staff leading service-learning courses or incorporating a day of service into their study abroad programs, this session provides an overview of best practices in community engagement abroad. Participants will explore integration strategies for meaningful service experiences and review a checklist of recommendations from the Center for Public Service to ensure ethical, sustainable, and impactful global education initiatives.
