Biography
How did studying abroad affect your academic and/or professional career?
Studying abroad at the London School of Economics profoundly impacted my academic and professional journey. The rigorous curriculum challenged me and deepened my understanding of economics, while attending talks by Economists such as Nobel laureate Claudia Goldin inspired my research interests. Engaging with a mutlicultural community of like-minded peers enriched my learning experience and expanded my global perspective.
How did you explore your hobbies, interests, and passions abroad?
The city's bustling atmosphere, coupled with its excellent public transportation, made it easy to venture out and discover new experiences. I found myself constantly stepping out of my comfort zone, trying new activities and visiting various cultural hotspots. The abundance of student discounts at restaurants, attractions, and events allowed me to indulge in a wide range of experiences without breaking the bank.
Why would you recommend your respective abroad program or location?
I highly recommend the study abroad program at LSE! I also recommend studying abroad in any university in London.
What should students consider when applying and preparing for their time abroad?
When preparing for a year-long study abroad program in the UK, you should consider the rigorous academic environment at institutions like LSE and be ready for a specialized focus in your studies. Additionally, you should prepare for London's cooler, wetter weather, budget for the higher cost of living, and take advantage of student discounts.
Did your identity impact your study abroad experience?
As a South Asian woman, my identity positively impacted my study abroad experience in London. The city's interculturality was refreshing compared to my environment in the US, and I felt completely comfortable there. Exploring South Asian hubs like Southall and Wembley allowed me to connect with the South Asian diaspora through culture and cuisine, enriching my overall experience.
Share a story about a time you experienced cultural immersion.
One of my most enriching experiences of cultural immersion in London was participating in workshops at the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. These monthly sessions allowed anyone to draw from the museum's portraits and sculptures, providing all necessary materials for free. Engaging actively in this hands-on experience deepened my appreciation for English art and history, making me feel more involved than just a passive observer. This opportunity not only introduced me to the rich cultural heritage of the UK but also fostered a connection with the art community, enhancing my overall understanding of the local culture.
