Biography

How did studying abroad affect your academic and/or professional career?

While in Amsterdam, I immersed myself in psychology, digital media, and SLAM courses, which broadened my understanding in these fields. The opportunity to take courses at both CIEE and the University of Amsterdam provided an academic experience that challenged me intellectually. Academically, this experience solidified my passion for psychology and digital media, leading me to decide to pursue a Master's degree in the Netherlands. Professionally, studying abroad has opened doors to a global network of peers and professionals. The cultural insights and practical knowledge I gained during my time in Amsterdam have made me more competitive in the job market and have inspired me to seek international career opportunities.

How did you explore your hobbies, interests, and passions abroad?

Exploring my hobbies and interests while studying in Amsterdam was an integral part of my journey. The city's vibrant culture and community provided countless opportunities to immerse myself in new experiences and pursue my interests in unique ways. My primary academic interests were explored practically. I participated in lectures and seminars that allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts, enhancing my skills and deepening my passion for the field. Outside of academics, I took full advantage of Amsterdam's rich cultural scene by exploring the city's museums, art galleries, and historical sites. Early in the semester, I took the opportunity to kayak through the canals of Amsterdam, providing me with a unique way to explore the city. Additionally, I had the chance to practice my Dutch, which brought me closer to my Dutch roots.

Why would you recommend your respective abroad program or location?

The program offers a wide array of courses, including psychology, digital media, and SLAM, providing a comprehensive and interdisciplinary academic experience. The University of Amsterdam is a prestigious institution known for its high academic standards, and is also a great university for psychology. Additionally, the CIEE program offers numerous extracurricular activities, from pancake boats to an overnight trip to Antwerp, Belgium. These experiences enriched my time abroad and created lasting memories.

What should students consider when applying and preparing for their time abroad?

Ask yourself, “What do I want to take away from my study abroad experience?” Research programs thoroughly to ensure they align with your academic and career goals, and understand the financial aspects, including tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and travel. Academic requirements and language skills should also be reviewed to ensure you meet the criteria. I also recommend pre-approving courses with your department to confirm whether credit transfer for certain courses is possible before traveling abroad.

Did your identity impact your study abroad experience?

Yes, as a Dutch citizen, I was motivated to study abroad in Amsterdam to develop my Dutch-speaking skills. My background impacted not only my choice to go to Amsterdam but also my experience once I arrived. From the moment I stepped foot in the city, I felt immediately at ease and comfortable in my new environment. This was partly due to my ability to understand the language, which made navigating daily life more comfortable. However, my interest in immersing myself in Dutch culture and customs further enriched my time abroad. Embracing my heritage allowed me to connect more deeply with the local community and fully appreciate the unique aspects of Dutch life.

During my time in Amsterdam, I had the opportunity to experience the city's cultural richness firsthand, particularly through the annual Amsterdam Light Festival. As we took a boat tour through the canals, the city was illuminated with amazing artworks, each telling a different story and showcasing the creativity and innovation of the artists. This experience was a blend of cultural immersion and seasonal celebration, highlighting Amsterdam's unique ability to combine history, art, and community in a way that brings people together.
