Virtual Engagement

The following Center for Global Education Virtual Global Initiatives are available to Tulane faculty preparing for the Fall 2020 semester:

Virtual Cultural Enrichment for Your Classroom

The OSA has staffing resources across the globe to enrich your classroom with a global experience through short, online, non-credit cultural and international enrichment for your course content.

Tap into the Center for Global Education’s “Global Perspectives” Series for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 to supplement your online course content.

If your course explores a theme not covered in the “Global Perspectives” series, our staff may still be able to facilitate a virtual site visit, experiential learning activity, discussion section, language exchange with peers at a partner institution, a guest lecture from a scholar at one of our partner institutions, or an interview with an international community activist.

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

The Center for Global Education has a long list of international partnerships with faculty across the world that are eager to collaborate with Tulane faculty on joint teaching initiatives that may lead to longer-term internationalization projects and research. The OSA can pair Tulane faculty members with interested colleagues at a partner institution. Faculty members can share expertise and lectures across courses via virtual platforms and students can engage in discussion sections with international peers in their partner course in order to provide cross-cultural perspectives on course themes. These exchanges can be short, pilot exchanges of one or two lectures/discussions, or partnered faculty can work together with the administrative support of OSA to build a semester-long collaborative course.

Online Research and Internships in Global Contexts

OSA is available to direct students to partner institutions and global organizations with research and internship possibilities in all fields of study that can be completed in a virtual context during moments of limited student mobility. Interested students can inquire about possibilities to work virtually with international organizations or to conduct research with international faculty.

Virtual Exchange-Cross Enrollment

A department may be interested in considering ways to broaden course offerings for their students. The Office of Study Abroad can facilitate students taking one or more online courses at a host university abroad, and vice versa, when student mobility is not available. To partake in such courses, students would not need to be fully enrolled with a host institution, but would rather be able to opt to take one or more courses through a virtual exchange or virtual direct enrollment scenario. This may be of particular interest to students studying languages or special topics courses not regularly taught on Tulane’s campus. Key OSA partner universities already offering virtual exchange cross-enrollment for our Tulane students include: Kansai Gaidai, Japan and USFQ, Ecuador.

Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI)

The Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) is a cross-cultural assessment tool used to measure intercultural competence by thousands of individuals and organizations to build intercultural competence to achieve international and domestic diversity and inclusion goals and outcomes. The Center for Global Education assists Tulane faculty and staff in taking advantage of the Intercultural Development Inventory in order to increase the intercultural competence of students, faculty, and staff across campus. For more information on the IDI and a list of qualified administrators of the IDI across Tulane visit: https://global.tulane.edu/IDI.
