Biography

How did studying abroad affect your academic and/or professional career?

Studying abroad helped me expand my professional network by allowing me to meet so many new people from other countries and also from here in the States! Academically, it was fascinating to study topics from an international perspective. For example, I took an American history class while in the UK, and it was a very cool way to get a British perspective on American issues.

How did you explore your hobbies, interests, and passions abroad?

My host university put on a ton of programs and excursions for students to explore the university, Brighton, and personal interests. Some of my favorites were a introductory cooking class held in the Student Union, and the trip to watch a performance of La Traviata at the Glyndebourne Opera House! I also took advantage of the wide variety of clubs and societies on campus, as they were a great way to explore Brighton with local students who shared interests with me.

Why would you recommend your respective abroad program or location?

Brighton is an amazing city to be a student in! It has a ton of cool shops to explore and cafes and restaurants to hang out in, and a beautiful beach to relax on and enjoy the scenery. Plus, it is very well connected to the rest of the country, making it very easy to visit neighboring towns (like Lewes!) or travel to further cities (like London, or even Edinburgh or Paris!). And the University of Sussex itself has a great mix of programs and a large population of international students, so anyone can find a class they're interested in and know that they'll have an experienced advisor to effectively help guide them through the process of studying abroad.

What should students consider when applying and preparing for their time abroad?

For me, cheap and reliable public transportation was a very high priority. I wanted to be able to explore more than just my host city while I was abroad, so I made sure to research my transportation options, any student discounts, and what apps/passes I would need to travel. Cost of living was also important! I had to budget enough money to cover my living expenses and any recreational activities I wanted to do, like travel or joining a club.

Every year, the University of Sussex hosts "Freshers Week", a way of introducing new students to the Uni and the host city. As an international student, it was a rapid-fire way of immersing myself into the new culture. Within the span of that week, me and my new friends learned the ins-and-outs of the public transport system (buses and trains!), explored the top sights in Brighton, and experienced British party culture (turns out students in the UK stay out a lot later than students in the US!). During the downtime between Freshers' events, tried out some of the local pubs, including my first pub trivia night, where we won the £200 cash pool and a bar of Tony's Chocolonely!

Biography

How did studying abroad affect your academic and/or professional career?

Studying abroad transformed my academic and professional career. For one, I switched my Spanish major to a Spanish and Portuguese major. While I was always passionate about traveling and international development, I now know after graduating I want to work in international education to facilitate these world-opening exchange experiences for other students. Through study abroad I can empower other young people to push for sustainable and empathetic development.

How did you explore your hobbies, interests, and passions abroad?

During my two study abroads I tried to put myself in safe yet uncomfortable situations frequently. For example, I played soccer (which I haven’t played since middle school) with a group of American and Spanish students. Another special experience for me was volunteering at an elementary school in their English classroom. On the side I also tutored two young girls in English. Instead of payment, I would accompany the mom on errands or taking the girls to the park to improve my language skills.

Why would you recommend your respective abroad program or location?

I can’t speak highly enough about the Summer in Brazil program. São Paulo is such a creative and dynamic city that feels so big it never ends. The program is set up to push students’ boundaries and think critically about Brazil’s history and social issues. I loved Sevilla, Spain just as much because Sevillanos are so proud of their city and excited to share their culture with foreigners. I fell in love with the city instantly for its warm weather, walk and bikeability, and lively student population.

What should students consider when applying and preparing for their time abroad?

I recommend pushing your comfort zone to make the most of your study abroad experience! Pick the location even if your friends aren’t going with you, think about a homestay to improve your language skills, and make an effort to befriend locals and people outside your program to expose yourself to different sides of your city.

Did your identity impact your study abroad experience?

As a Jewish woman, I did try to connect with the Jewish communities in São Paulo and Sevilla. In São Paulo I got connected with a few Jewish Brazilians that were involved in the São Paulo Orthodox Jewish community. In Sevilla I frequented the historically Jewish neighborhood and joined the reform Jewish community during high holidays in the city.

In São Paulo I lived in a shared apartment with two Brazilian girls and two American boys. The entire experience was cultural immersion, from learning how to use the laundry machine, that Brazilians take multiple showers a day, to trying my roommates feijoada. I loved our dynamic and am so grateful to my Brazilian host roommates for welcoming me into their apartment and bearing with me as my Portuguese improved from survival-level.

Barcelona is a great place to study abroad. Proximity wise it is easy to travel on the weekends to other cities and countries due to its location. The weather does not get cold until December which is also a major benefit when you are trying to explore the city. The staff was very responsive and willing to work with individuals when conflicts arose.

My identity allowed me to become more independent as I had to figure out things by myself as I was on my own. Being abroad also allowed me to grow and tackle real world situations.

The University of Amsterdam is a prestigious institution known for its high academic standards, and is also a great university for psychology. Ask yourself, “What do I want to take away from my study abroad experience?” Research programs thoroughly to ensure they align with your academic and career goals, and understand the financial aspects, including tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and travel. Academic requirements and language skills should also be reviewed to ensure you meet the criteria. I also recommend pre-approving courses with your department to confirm whether credit transfer for certain courses is possible before traveling abroad.

Did your identity impact your study abroad experience?

Yes, as a Dutch citizen, I was motivated to study abroad in Amsterdam to develop my Dutch-speaking skills. My background impacted not only my choice to go to Amsterdam but also my experience once I arrived. From the moment I stepped foot in the city, I felt immediately at ease and comfortable in my new environment. This was partly due to my ability to understand the language, which made navigating daily life more comfortable. However, my interest in immersing myself in Dutch culture and customs further enriched my time abroad. Embracing my heritage allowed me to connect more deeply with the local community and fully appreciate the unique aspects of Dutch life.

Biography

How did studying abroad affect your academic and/or professional career?

Studying abroad gave me the opportunity to take an array of unique classes for my unit of study only offered at my abroad university. I was incredibly fortunate to study environmental biology in a country that is a trailblazing force in biological sciences and conservation and a university that is a pioneer for ecological research. Through studying abroad at the University of Sydney, I was able to expand my global network of other students taking similar coursework and biologists, professors, and researchers in my field. I was also able to challenge myself to take courses at a university with a significantly different grading scale than Tulane, which prepares me for future graduate school coursework.

How did you explore your hobbies, interests, and passions abroad?

Studying abroad allowed me to pursue different habitats in a unique and unfamiliar setting, which pushed my comfort zone and brought self growth in return. Those hobbies including tackling challenging hikes in unfamiliar terrain, learning how to independently organize travel, discovering a newfound love for cooking and finding healthy recipes to make on my own, and gaining newfound confidence in my ability to live on my own and navigate a new city through walking and public transportation.

Why would you recommend your respective abroad program or location?

I would recommend Sydney to every student considering studying abroad and I would choose it again and again. Sydney is incredibly safe, clean, easy to navigate, and it has the most friendly, happy people. There is such an amazing work-life balance and such a healthy, active mindset and I genuinely felt like I was the happiest I have ever been living and studying in a new city. Sydney’s location is perfect for traveling to and exploring other parts of Australia and other countries in Oceania and Southeast Asia, which is an incredible opportunity that should not be overlooked.

What should students consider when applying and preparing for their time abroad?

One part of studying in Australia to prepare for is navigating the time difference between Sydney and back home in the Unites States (+16 hours). I would definitely make a plan with friends and loved ones before you leave about working around the time change. It definitely requires active communication on both ends and might take some trial and error when you arrive in Australia, but overall it was easier to navigate than I had previously thought! Definitely be sure to complete all the necessary paperwork and forms in a timely manner to insure that everything is cleared and ready to go before you leave!

Did your identity impact your study abroad experience?

Living and navigating a new city as a woman was certainly something I worried about before leaving for abroad. I was sure to always be aware of my surroundings and tried to avoid walking by myself at night. However, I always felt very safe in Sydney surrounded by extremely friendly and kind people.

I was incredibly fortunate to live in an apartment with girls from the United States and from countries all over the world. My immediate roommate was from Vienna, Austria, and some of my other flatmates were from Germany and South Korea. Some of my favorite memories from studying abroad were the times that we had roommate dinners or friends over at our apartment and we would share stories and experiences from our home countries. This experience allowed me to make close friendships with girls from all over the world and gain a global perspective I did not have before.

From my program, I was able to sign up for a K-pop dance class thinking it was just learning some choreography from new releases. But when I went to the class, I was actually able to meet one of the choreographers for a popular group that told us the art of creating choreographies based on the genre of music that is released as well as the inspirations they get from other dance styles across the world. I was also able to learn how they incorporate Korean dance styles and blend Korean traditional elements with Western traditions.
